Postponed – April 14: Chelsea baseball field to become Wayne Welton field

Chelsea High School has an extensive resume of great coaches and winning sports programs.

Among the best in Bulldog history is former baseball coach and athletic director Wayne Welton who coached more than 1,100 high school baseball games and amassed a record of 767-357-11, with a 1991 Class B state title.

Also while at the helm, Welton’s Bulldog baseball teams amassed 13 Southeastern Conference championships.

On Saturday, April 14, Welton will be honored for his coaching achievements when the Chelsea High School baseball field is named after him.

Everyone is invited to the festivities, which begin at 9 a.m. with coffee and donuts. The commemoration ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.

The former head coach was in the dugout for 32 years while strolling the sidelines as the athletic director for 22 years, according to his bio on the University of Michigan website.

Welton also was named the 1991 MHSBCA Coach of the Year and is an eight-time Regional Coach of the Year. He was elected to the MHSBCA Hall of Fame in 2003 and reached the 700-win plateau in 2007, according to the website.

He was named the Regional Athletic Director of the Year by the MIAAA in 2010 and earned the Bush Service Award by the Michigan High School Athletic Association in 2006.

Also according to his bio, Welton coached with USA Baseball as part of the Junior Olympics Task Force in 1995 in Colorado Springs, Colo. He also has worked the Michigan baseball camps since 2002.

  1. Congratulations, Wayne! I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this special honor. You have made a difference to so many young athletes. I am hoping to stop by on April 14th.
