April 22: Celebrate Earth Day by learning about green burial

Earth-Day

What do Earth Day and Green Burial have in common?

Come find out on Friday, April 22, 7-8:30 p.m. at Canterbury House, 721 E. Huron in Ann Arbor.

Earth Day 2016 is about planting 7.8 billion trees to create a “cleaner, healthier and more sustainable planet” (www.Earthday.org). Green Burial promotes the same thing by encouraging going back to the earth naturally when you die. The fledgling Ann Arbor Green Burial Network, working to educate the public and create more green burial options in our area sponsors this event.

So often, when folks grasp the concept of Green Burial, they say something like, “Right on; just bury me and plant a tree.” So let’s celebrate Earth Day with music and stories by local artists, refreshments and information about just what green burial is, where it’s available, and how to do it.

Want to make a positive impact on the earth? You’re not alone. A study last year by the Funeral and Memorial Information Council says 64 percent of people 40 and older expressed interest in green burials. Currently, however, our only local option is in Milan, 20 miles south of Ann Arbor.

What will it take to bring cemeteries in line with our wishes? Education, innovation, and demand.

So, get around to it – learn about your options, plan ahead, ask for what you want, and promote a way of death that is in line with your way of life. After all, we only have one earth, and we will have one death.
