Last year’s plans for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2020, were cancelled, as were so many milestones during the pandemic.

This year, the theme of the 51st anniversary is “Restore Our Earth”, and the Biden Administration has decided to convene a global climate summit on Earth Day 2021.

Hours after taking office, Biden moved to restore the U.S. as a member of the Paris Climate Accord and tapped John Kerry, President Barack Obama’s secretary of state and an architect of the Accord, to serve in the newly created role of special presidential envoy on climate change, the first time an official dedicated to climate change will have a seat on the National Security Council.

“Just like we need a unified national response to COVID-19, we desperately need a unified national response to the climate crisis because there is a climate crisis,” Biden said. “In my view, we’ve already waited too long to deal with this climate crisis. We can’t wait any longer. We see it with our own eyes. We feel it. We know it in our bones. And it’s time to act,” he said.
