As Veterans Day nears, pause for thought and thank those who served

File photo from Veterans Day last year in Chelsea.

As Veterans Day approaches, Chelsea Update would like you to think about these poignant images from one local veteran, and also to remind you of the tribute that will take place at Veterans Park on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 1 p.m.

Some have accused local veterans of wrapping themselves in the flag.

Yet they, themselves, never laced up a pair of combat boots and slung a rifle over their shoulder, never stood sonar watch on a ballistic missile sub or worked a dangerous carrier flight deck, never sallied forth into a storm on a cutter to save souls in distress or flew a combat air patrol, or done any of the thousand and one things our GIs do.

Take the time to thank the many veterans who live in our community, not just on Veterans Day or Memorial Day, but every day.

Although many of them don’t look for any special acknowledgement, veterans in this community are selfless contributors to worthwhile causes, civic groups and organizations and contribute behind the scenes, continuing to help others in the Chelsea community.

The members of American Legion Post 31, and all veterans throughout the area, no matter their age or their health, continue to serve their community as they did their country — without fanfare.

They stand up for the flag and cherish it and the freedoms that are associated with it.

However, it is true some are wrapped in the flag before they are lowered in the ground by veterans such as me.
