Mikey & Me, the Chelsea area dog foster facility, invites residents of the Chelsea community to attend a celebration Saturday, Aug. 10, from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the McKune Room of the Chelsea District Library.
It will be a chance to see a photo display and slideshow of how the foster care barn came to be, and Mikey & Me founder Dan DePew will be speaking. Light refreshments will be served.
“Since opening in 2016, Dan continues to fulfill his promise to his canine companion of 17 years, Mikey, made the day Mikey crossed over the rainbow bridge,” said Andrea Pawlowski, a volunteer for Mikey & Me. “The promise was to help other dogs in his memory. When Dan made that promise, he was not sure what it would look like, nor did he have any idea what it would grow to be.”
To date, DePew along with his team of more than 50 volunteers have found forever homes for 219 dogs, who were at high risk of being euthanized and were sitting in overcrowded shelters.
“When the dogs arrive at the Mikey & Me barn, located on Dan’s 10 acre property, they are greeted with love, lots of attention, and their very own 10 ft x 10 ft kennel,” said Pawlowski. “The dogs get walked four times a day, and have an indoor and outdoor play yard to enjoy some ‘off-leash’ time.”
Volunteers take the dogs on field trips and help them learn to socialize.
While at the barn, the dogs receive a full medical check up to address health issues, are brought up to date on vaccines, are microchipped, and are spayed/neutered prior to adoption.
DePew attributes a big part of Mikey & Me’s success to the ongoing support from residents of Chelsea and the surrounding communities as well as Mikey & Me’s large Facebook following.
