Aug. 9: Silver Maples to host ‘An Evening of Civil Discourse’

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Shawn Personke for the information in this story.)

An Evening of Civil Discourse will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 9, at 6:15 p.m., at Silver Maples of Chelsea, 100 Silver Maples Dr.

The vent is free and everyone is invited.

Now in its sixth year, the evening brings together Chelsea Mayor Jason Lindauer, State Representative Gretchen Driskell, U.S. Representative Tim Walberg, and Chris Matus, representing U.S. Senator Gary Peters. Each will share, listen, and discuss their perspectives about local, regional, and state issues and opportunities with their constituents.

Will Johnson came up with the idea. After seeing and hearing so much political rhetoric on the television and in the newspapers, Johnson. Chelsea Community Hospital’s president emeritus, felt that the people who live in the Chelsea area are intelligent and concerned enough to discuss the real issues facing our society in a civil and thoughtful manner. Thus was born An Evening of Civil Discourse.

Johnson will serve as moderator.

Unfortunately, the idea of politics, in general, usually has negative connotations, but knowing the person who represents you can make a difference.

“The person you read about in the newspaper can be quite different than the person you know,” said Shawn Personke, director of activities and public relations for Silver Maples of Chelsea. “An opportunity like An Evening of Civil Discourse can really help you understand a person better by meeting and talking to your representative. You have the chance to go past the superficial.”

Personke said that she had received many positive comments about first five years.

“We’re looking forward to hosting the event again,” she said.

Refreshments will be served.  For more information, visit www.silvermaples.org.
