Beach x-c teams begin season with solid starts

The Beach Middle School girls’ cross country team finished second out of eight teams on Wednesday, Sept. 11.

Highlights include a third-place finish by Caroline Hirth out 99 runners in a time of 14:04. Other strong finishes were made by Sydnee Liedel (10th) and Sydney Matusik (20th).

Cythina Gilliespie, Rose LaForest, Kaia Newman, and Kenndy Parker all came in together and pushed each other at the end.

The boys cross country team fourth out of eight teams, missing third place but just one point.

Top finishes were Joshua Kowalski (6th place) with a time of 12:27.

Foster Thorburn finished 20th and Connor Gilbreath (24th).

Other highlights include a personal record by Reese Smith, who shaved 2 and a half minutes off his time and Jeremy Northrup, who ran his first 2-mile race in middle school and finished in a time of 14:37.

Brandon DeGracia and Austin Lyles pushed each other at the end for solid finishes.

“We did a nice job running in the heat and cheering each other on,” Coach Loren Thorburn said of both team’s performance.
