(Chelsea Update would like to thank Wrestling Coach Adam French for the information in this story.)
The Chelsea Bulldogs finished fourth out of 16 teams in a recent wrestling tournament, going 3-2 in dual meets.
Chelsea was in an unusual draw for pool matches having both Brighton’s B-team and an “all-star” team made up of wrestlers from other teams in an effort to make up for an absence of one team.
With multiple wrestlers out of the line up (bronchitis and gone for the holidays) the Bulldogs worked hard and made the most of the matches they were able to wrestle.
Going 3-0 in pool play beating the Allstar team 48-21, Brighton B 55-24, and a close match the Parma Western, 38-30.
Coming out of pool play, the Bulldogs ran into a very tough Hartland team and lost 69-9, which dropped the team into the third-place match. The Bulldogs wrestled tough, but lost to Monroe, 48-21.
“Going into the day, I didn’t think we had a chance to place this high, but our pool draw helped out tremendously,” said Adam French, head wrestling coach, who added, “Our wrestlers made the most of the situation they were given and ended up ahead of some very good teams. We were giving up 3 weight classes and had to wrestle a man up a weight class the entire day.”
The wrestlers showed a lot of heart today, he said.
Picking up big wins for Chelsea were Steve Bleise 145 lbs (5-0), Dan Wisniewski 171 lbs (4-1), Ryan Eisley 189 & 215 lbs (4-1), Will McEachern 135 lbs (3-2), Alonzo Taylor 152 lbs (3-2), and Jacob Gaken 285 lbs (3-2).
Chelsea will head to Grass Lake for another team tournament on Dec. 27.
