Cancer Support Community provides space for connection during shelter in place order

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bonnie Dockham for the information in this story.)

The Cancer Support Community of Greater Ann Arbor (CSC) ensures that all people impacted by cancer are empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action, and sustained by community.

During the COVID-19 crisis the support group is dedicated to continuing to provide professional opportunities for connection during the COVID-19 crisis.

Recognizing the suppressed immune systems of cancer survivors, the CSC responded to the risk of COVID-19 very quickly, adopting a strategy early to continue support services and operations.

All free programs are offered online virtually, using HIPAA compliant video conferencing. CSC’s virtual programs started on Monday, March 16 and will continue as long as necessary to meet the needs of the community.

CSC has made additional efforts to ensure that people with cancer will not be isolated and will receive the support they need. As such, CSC works with community members individually to set up their devices and guide them through the process of accessing virtual programs. The full-service online program includes:

25 Real-time support groups per month
Live streaming meditation sessions twice per week
Weekly creative expression online meet-up
Web and Phone-based one-on-one counseling as needed
Prerecorded on demand Educational Workshops
On demand Yoga and exercise classes with CSC instructors streaming online

One member expressed sincere gratitude following her first video group stating, “It is almost as if we are still in the same room together.” If you or someone you love is dealing with cancer and could benefit from connection and professional support, visit our website at www.cancersupportannarbor.org.
