The Chelsea Area Historical Society is the proud recipient of a $25,000 grant from the Sage Foundation, an independent charitable organization in Brighton.

Melissa Sage Fadim oversees the private foundation that offers grants, gifts, scholarships, and loans to organizations.

“We were absolutely stunned when we opened the letter and discovered the accompanying check for $25,000,” said CAHS President Janet Ogle-Mater in a press release.

She said, “Jasen, our secretary, and I re-read the letter a half dozen times apiece to confirm its validity. It was so unexpected, but incredibly timely, as we face the need to secure a permanent home for CAHS and our wealth of area artifacts. This donation will be wonderful start toward that goal.”

The Sage Foundation was founded in 1955 with funding interests in the arts and humanities, education, social services, and other areas. The foundation recently provided grants for the restoration of Adrian’s last remaining original campus building, the 1860 Downs Hall, indicating an interest in the value of historic preservation as well.

“We feel very privileged to be deemed worthy of this contribution and intend to use it wisely toward our long-term goals,” said Ogle-Mater.

“CAHS will celebrate 40 years in 2014, and we have been nomadic for all those years. Opening the doors on an enduring historical museum for our Chelsea heritage is a goal we anticipate the community will welcome and support,” she said.
