Chelsea City Council appoints two board members

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission now has a full compliment of members with the unanimous approval of Lori Klein-Shapiro to the open seat on the commission on June 18.

Klein-Shapiro, who has lived in Chelsea for 7 months, is a social worker with a long-standing interest in human rights. She is also an adjunct professor at Wayne State University according to her application. Her term ends on Feb. 1, 2021.

In addition, Andrew Dunn, who has lived in Chelsea for a little more than a year, was appointed as an alternate member of the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals with his term ending on Sept. 30, 2020.

The Chelsea City Council also unanimously approved three city employee group contracts and expects to approve the police union contract at the next meeting. The Teamsters Local 214 agreed to a 3-year contract, which includes a 3-percent wage increase in 2018, and a 2-percent wage increases in both 2019 and 2020.

Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan thanked the union representatives for their willingness to negotiate in good faith, making the process a “smooth and fair one for both sides.” The contract runs from July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2021.

Also unanimously approved was a 2-percent wage increase for 13 part-time city employees effective July 1, 2018, and a 2-percent wage increase for the 12 non-union, salaried employees.

All of these increases were included in the recently adopted city budget.

The City Council also approved agreements with the Chelsea Senior Center, Chelsea Community Education, WAVE and AATA. All of these were also included in the city’s budget.

A meeting note for July. The City Council will meet on Monday, July 9 and Monday, July 23.

Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth reminded folks that as the temperatures rise, so do tempers, and please take it easy driving as children are out of school and outside playing and riding bikes.
