Chelsea City employees get small raises

Chelsea logoAll Chelsea City employees will soon see small increases in their pay checks.

Tuesday night, the Chelsea City Council unanimously approved recommendations for a one-time $100 lump sum payment plus a 1-percent increase for the about 12-member Police Officers Association of Michigan union members as well as the about 20 members of the Teamsters Local 214 union.

In addition, both groups will receive an additional 1-percent bump in their pay beginning in January 2014.

Employees in both groups signed a three-year agreement that began July 1, 2012 and ends June 30, 2015. Part of the agreement included an agreement with the city to re-open the contract in 2013 and 2014 to look at possible wage adjustments.

“Our employees are to be commended for their willingness to bargain in good faith for the mutual benefit of all,” City Manager John Hanifan noted in the agenda item summary.

In addition to the union employee wage increases, the City Council also approved an immediate 1-percent increase for the about 10 non-union and part-time employees. Plus, they will receive another 1-percent increase in January 2014.

So, all employees will receive a 2-percent total increase.

Hanifan told the City Council, the 2013-14 budget will accommodate the about $58,000 total increase in wages for city employees.
