Chelsea Community Fair: Ice Cream Parlor offers many hand-dipped choices

File photo by Crystal Hayduk. The ice cream parlor at the Chelsea Community Fair is a big hit.

This is the fourth year for the ice cream parlor at the Chelsea Community Fair, which takes place Aug. 20-24.

The building sits between the red barn and the gazebo just up the hill from the Main Arena.

It replaces the popular ice cream truck that was introduced to the Chelsea Community Fair by Earl Heller and became so popular that the hand-dipped ice cream scoopers needed more space to serve all the hungry ice cream lovers.

The 20-by-20 building with two serving windows was first opened in 2016.

Fair board members looked carefully for a spot to locate an ice cream parlor and since folks were already enjoying the breeze that seems to always be present in that spot, it seemed like the perfect fit.

And, you can credit Neil Horning for overseeing the ice cream offerings. He said there will be chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, mint chocolate chip, butter pecan and Moose tracks flavors hand scooped into a cup for $3.

Visitors to the 82nd Annual Chelsea Community Fair will find the ice cream parlor between the red barn and the gazebo.

He said the milkshakes, which are made with whole milk, cost $4.

Horning orders the ice cream by the tub and about 175 tubs are consumed each year.

The hours for the parlor are Tuesday, Aug. 20 starting at 4 p.m. until about 10 p.m. and Wednesday-Saturday, the parlor will be open from noon until about 10 p.m.

Each year, the profits from ice cream sales go back into the community and about five different groups volunteer to man the parlor during fair.
