In the ag area at this year’s 76th Annual Chelsea Community Fair, the number of cuke and apple entries were larger than last year.
However, the number of tomato and pepper entries were down.
But the selection of herbs facing long-time judge Christine Meyers was, in her words, “a beautiful variety.” The front table was filled with dill and basil and parsley and chives to name a few.
“I look for nice, healthy green foliage,” in making her first, second, third and fourth place choices said Meyers.
A self-professed herb lover who has a large garden of her own on her Sylvan Township property, Meyers offered tips to those who exhibited this year or who might want to enter the 77th Chelsea Community Fair in 2014.
She suggests entering more than one spring. “I like a bouquet in a glass container that shows off the beauty of the herb.”
“Put a little love in it,” she says of the presentation.
“I know it’s hard, but be sure they are in water and pick the nicest, greenest, fullest ones and make a nice bouquet,” she said.
In addition to being lovely examples of their variety, many of the first-place winners were presented in an attractive container that showed off their beauty, height and foliage.
(Publisher’s note: No, I did not chicken out. The weird weather this summer combined with the addition of a new puppy put a damper on defending my cherry tomato wins from last year. And, I didn’t enter any peppers, either. In fact, I wasn’t able to enter anything. But wait until next year. I’ll be ready. )
