(Chelsea Update would like to thank, Patty Roberts and Karen Persello and the entire staff of the Chelsea District Library for the information in this article.)

For the second year, the Chelsea District Library is offering “Reading With a Buddy.” This program is a very successful summer program to stop the summer slide of learning.

Youth Service Group teens from 12-18 years have volunteered to be reading buddies. Kids sign up and are paired with a trained “buddy.” Each session is 15 minutes.

Training is mandatory and was taught by Lisa Kaemming, reading specialist at North Creek Elementary School. Although not a tutoring session, these volunteers are trained to listen and encourage and to use tools to make this buddy reading session a very positive experience.

Kaemming says, “ This is the most effective way of helping these kids learn and love to read.”

There will be prizes each week and then a grand prize at the end of the project.
