Chelsea girl’s tennis off to great start

Chelsea girl’s tennis finally got to begin their season, defeating Mason and Adrian this week.

Mason is a very strong D2 program, so we always enjoy seeing how we match up against them said coach Matt Pedlow.

“They are well coached, and their 1 singles is one of the better players that we will see this year,” he said, adding, “After going up 4-0 against Mason, Chelsea had to pick up one more flight to secure the win.”

The match came down to the 1 doubles match and the 2 singles match.

At 1 doubles, Kendall Tucker and Morgan Moore won 7-5, 6-7, 6-3.

“I was really proud of the way they battled back after dropping a very close 2nd set. We talked in between sets and they were determined to play smarter and finish points quicker,” Pedlow said.

At 2 singles, newcomer Kyra VanBatavia won 7-6, 2-6, 7-5.

“It’s rare you see a match this close while seeing someone lose a set 6-2, but Kyra fought back to get the win,” Pedlow said, adding, “All of the momentum was with her opponent, but Kyra wouldn’t let her string together more than two games in a row and was able to win a close 3rd set. It was a nice victory in her first Chelsea varsity match as she moved here at the beginning of the year from Minnesota.”

Also winning for Chelsea was:

  • Emma Catalina at 3 singles
  • Carli Martin at 4 singles
  • Madilynn O’Hara/Corrine Dale at 3 doubles
  • Remy Sturt/Madisen Chinavare at 4 doubles

On Thursday, Chelsea downed Adrian 8-0. Picking up their first varsity wins were freshman Rachel Bareis at 4 singles (6-0, 6-0) and Sierra Martinez-Kratz who partnered with Remy Sturt at 4 doubles.

Chelsea plays Saline at home on Wednesday and Bedford on Thursday.
