Chelsea girls track and field team finishes 2nd in SEC

Chelsea, Dexter, and Adrian came into the SEC White Finals meet 4-1 in dual meet records. The finals meet takes into account dual meet records as well as the final meet standings to decide the Conference Championship.

The top three team scores were Dexter 159 pts, Chelsea 152.5 pts, and Adrian 106 pts. As a result, the Chelsea girls finished 2nd in SEC White Division.

“I am proud of how our team came together and competed against tough league competition,” said coach Loren Thorburn. “We had a number of season and personal records as well as gutsy performances by individuals.”

He said 16 of the 20 girls who competed scored at the SEC finals meet.

“Our 2nd place finish in a competitive track and field conference speaks volumes to our athletes’ dedication, competitiveness, and grit,” he said.

All-Conference Honors go to individuals who place in the top three and relay teams who place 1st.

All-Conference Honors go to the seven individuals listed below:

Rachel Valek (captain): 3rd in Shot put and 3rd in Discus

Lily Francisco: 1st in Shot put

Jordan Holton: 2nd in Discus

Hannah Almhiemid: 2nd in 100m Hurdles and 3rd in 300m Hurdles

Jesse Jacobusse: 2nd in 1600m, 1st in 800m, and 2nd in 3200m

Kaehla Manly: 1st in the 300m Hurdles

Sydney Matusik: 2nd in 400m Dash

Notable mentions: Karana Wickens, a captain, scoring in multiple events: 4×800 (4th), 1600m (4th), and 3200m (4th).

Laney Miller, a captain, scoring in multiple events: pole vault (8th), 100m hurdles (4th), 300m hurdles (5th), and the 4x400m relay (2nd).

“Their consistent, gritty performances show why they are captains on this team,” the coach said.

Chelsea will host the regional pole-vault competition on Thursday and then travel to Monroe-Jefferson for the main regional meet on Friday.

Those not participating at the regional meet on Thursday and Friday will be eligible to participate in the Huron JV Meet at Huron High School on Wednesday.
