Chelsea golf: state tourney bound after regional title

(Chelsea Update would like to thank coach Joe Ewald for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Golf Team competed in regional play on Wednesday, May 30 at the Lakes of Taylor Golf Course.

Nineteen teams were represented at the Bulldog’s regional, and the goal was to finish in the top 3 to advance to the State Meet.

“We felt we were one of the better teams, so if we played well, we had a pretty good chance to advance, but there were still a lot of teams, and its golf … so anything can happen,” said coach Joe Ewald.

Chelsea was paired with the better teams the coach said, “and as the day unfolded, my focus (or should I say stress) shifted from the possibility of qualifying, to realizing we had a chance to win the tournament.”

The course and the conditions were tough, but the guys kept battling all day, and walked away with the trophy as regional champions, Ewald said.

This may not have been the strongest Regional we have ever played in, but “regional titles are not easy to come by, so when you see the opportunity for a win, you don’t want to let it slip away,” the coach said.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs once again was Lucas Derosia with a 76.

Tyler Emmert came up big for the Bulldogs, shooting an 80. Rounding out the scoring was Sam Yax with an 88, and Tim Lyons with an 89.

The team will compete in the Division 2 State Meet Friday and Saturday, June 8-9 at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek.
