The Chelsea Boy’s Golf Team played in an invitational hosted by Napoleon at The Grande Golf Course on Tuesday, April 22 and finished 5th out of 14 teams.

The bulldogs shot a score of 368 on a very cold and windy day; not too bad considering very tough conditions on a demanding golf course, said coach Joe Ewald.

The event was won by Marshall, “one of the best teams in the state in our division,” the coach said, with a score of 322.

Scoring for Chelsea was Zach Mckinley with an 88, Jacob Hauser and Teddy Darr both shot 93, and Sean Lyons had a 94.

On Wednesday, April 23, Chelsea Hosted the Milan Big Reds at Reddeman Farms, and the Bulldogs won the match 171 to 178. “I was very pleased with the results, in (once again) tough and windy conditions,” Ewald said, adding, “The score was better than any we posted at Reddeman last year,  and successive drops in score of 10 shots, then 8 shots from our first Match, tells me we have things going in the right direction.”

He said, “If we can see that type of drop in our scoring one more time by the end of the year, we will be a pretty good golf team.”

Leading the way for Chelsea was Darr with a solid 39. “He tripled the 1st hole and then turned it around, that’s the kind of determination coaches look for,” Ewald said.

Also scoring for Chelsea was JJ Duncan with a 41, Mckinley with a 45, and Hauser with a 46.

The Bulldogs finished up the week by splitting the squad, and playing in two Invitationals on Saturday April 26. One team went to Eldorado Golf Course in Mason and shot a score of 363; the other squad shot a 364 at the Pinckney Invitational held at Rush Lake Hills Golf Course.

“The scores were not great, but they were better than our first 18-hole event,” the coach said.

Scoring for Chelsea in Mason was Lyons and Duncan with a pair of 89’s, Hauser shot 90, and Darr and McKinley both shot 95.

In Pinckney, the scoring was led by Michael Purdy with an 87, Kurt Jolly with an 88, Joe Slusser shot 92, and Preston Ewald had a 97. “We showed that we have plenty of depth, but now it’s time for some scoring leaders to emerge,” Ewald said.
