Chelsea High School’s Class of 2019 graduation celebration weekend began in the auditorium on May 31 with the district’s traditional Class Night.

In what could be regarded as a type of dress rehearsal for graduation, seniors filed in accompanied by their class advisor, Karen Kurcz, and faculty escorts, Art Finger, Valerie Johnson, Marta Learman, Laura Lutz, and Matt Pedlow.

A recording of the customary “Pomp and Circumstance” played in the background.

Principal Mike Kapolka and Assistant Principal Dr. Luman Strong introduced the students individually, listing activities they were involved in, their post-high school plans, and scholarships and awards. “This is both a look back and a look ahead,” said Kapolka of the information presented.

High school counselors presented certificates representing school awards and college scholarships, while 30 members of community organizations presented local scholarships and awards.

In total, 372 awards were bestowed upon 138 students, honoring various achievements and participation during their high school career.

Two students, Drew Vanderspool and Jack Conlin, were recognized by their peers as “The Most Representative Students in the Class of 2019.” Seniors were given the opportunity to vote for two students to represent them as a group based on character, integrity, and achievements.
