Chelsea High School students win 2017 Congressional App Challenge

Four students from Chelsea High School, Madison Burlett, Rose LaForest, Cate Start, and Alex Steinaway, were awarded first place in the Congressional App Challenge for Michigan’s 7th District.

The announcement was made Wednesday during Computer Science Education Week by Congressman Tim Walberg.

The team’s teacher is Melissa McIntosh.

Their winning app, “M.A.D. Planner,” allows users to plan for different types of parties and events, track a budget, and invite guests.

It will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol and featured on the House of Representatives website along with other winning entries from around the country.

“The Congressional App Challenge is an outstanding opportunity for students to showcase their creativity and computer science skills, while fostering a fun learning environment,” said Walberg.

“Congratulations to Madison, Rose, Cate, and Alex on winning this year’s contest, and I commend all the participants for their hard work and entrepreneurial spirit. I look forward to seeing the bright futures ahead of them.”

Second place was a tie awarded to both Robert Moore from Chelsea High School and Jaymin Matthes from Western Middle School. Moore’s teacher is Melissa McIntosh while Matthes’ teacher is Kim Allison.

Moore created an app entitled “CHS Sign In/Out,” which works as a school district kiosk that allows teachers to keep track of students signing in and out of offices.
