Chelsea High School wins Trex Plastic film competition

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Shawn Sinacola for the information in this story.)

There’s exciting news to celebrate this week of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day.

Chelsea High School (CHS) won the Trex Plastic Film Recycling Challenge for the category of high schools with populations are 801-1000 students.

Thanks to all of the hard work of the CHS Arbor Club, Bio Club, and Independence Hall students; the donations from Chelsea residents; and the support of the Chelsea District Library, the Washington Street Education Center, Agricole, The LakeHouse Bakery, ArtQuest, the Chelsea Zero Waste Coalition, and Serendipity Books.

Together, we recycled over 1,443 pounds of plastic bags and plastic film. Every bag recycled is one less in our landfills.

Chelsea High School will be awarded a Trex bench to be placed in the Alumni Arbor. Arbor and Bio Club students look forward to placing the new bench along with the Peace Pole, 50 Thuja Green Giant trees, 50 varieties of wildflowers, and a flower bulb for every student and staff in celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day as soon as it is safe to do so post-pandemic.

Trex says that more than 1,000 schools registered for the Challenge with 725 reporting.

At this time, Trex plans to offer the Challenge again for the 2020-21 school year.

The Chelsea Zero Waste Coalition wishes to remind residents that plastic bags and plastic film #4 are NOT permissible in the WWRA recycling system. Plastic bags and film can only be recycled through in-store-drop off programs, such as those at Meijer, Polly’s, Target, and Kohl’s, all of whom return the plastic to Trex for repurposing into composite decking.

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, make today the day you reject and replace single use plastic. For the plastic film that you absolutely cannot avoid, consider saving it and donating it to the Chelsea High School Trex Plastic Film Competition, which tentatively will resume Nov. 15.

  1. That is fantastic! Proud of all that participated. And it taught me more about how to recycle.

  2. Congratulations to Chelsea High School students on winning the new bench from Trex. You did a great job in colleting all the plastic. We all know it was a lot of work! I prefer to avoid plastic but sometimes that isn’t possible especially through the pandemic. Looking forward to Nov. when we can start recycling plastic for the school again. I’m saving mine already. It would be great if you win again next year. Another example of what a great place Chelsea is!

  3. Congratulations, Mrs Sinacola and CHS students!!! We recycle all of our plastic bags and are so glad to see Trex doing this, and CHS getting involved in the challenge!!
    Congratulations again!!!

  4. We live in Japan and both work on a military base. Due to the pandemic we are now forced to use the bags again. Looking forward to using my cloth bags again!
