Chelsea Human Rights Commission Elects Officers

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission welcomed new member Jacquelyn Bullerman at its Feb.1 meeting.

The commission elected officers with Susan Morrel-Samuels returning as chair; Mary Keaton as vice-chair, and Bullerman as secretary.

HRC member Joanne Ladio shared feedback from January’s MLK Days of Service and said it really became something the community embraced this year. Many groups took responsibility for their own events including the Chelsea Senior Center’s Intergenerational Center, the Material Girls, as well as the Chelsea District Library. Ladio attributed good publicity as a key to the event’s success.

Also discussed at the meeting was the HRC’s 2023 plan, which will tentatively include a work session to better get to know HRC members, asking Chelsea’s police chief to visit with the HRC, more training from the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, and the feasibility of a civility month program.

There is currently an opening on the HRC. For more information, go to https://www.city-chelsea.org/boards-committees-commissions.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the HRC is on March 1 at 7 p.m.
