The Chelsea Human Rights Commission is working on setting a date for a work session to clarify exactly what its role is.
That follows an appearance by Susan Montenegro, assistant city manager of Chelsea, at the HRC’s Aug. 7 meeting. Montenegro spoke about her recent appointment as the Title VI Non-Discrimination Plan Coordinator by Chelsea City Council on Aug. 5,
The purpose of the plan is to provide fairness and equity in all of its programs, services, and activities, which must abide by and enforce federal and state civil rights legislation.
HRC Chair Mary Keaton expressed concern about how Montenegro’s appointment affects the HRC’s role in the complaint process as well as in the community, and if it changes the HRC’s mission.
Chelsea City Council member Kate Mehuron, liaison to the HRC, said that the information should have come directly to the HRC’s attention and that she would be contacting Chelsea City Manager Marty Colburn about it.
A date for an HRC work session is expected to be announced soon.
