Chelsea Kiwanis Club 2015 year in review

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea Kiwanis Club divides expenses into eight committees to keep track of monies returned to the community.

The first committee is Young Children-Priority One, serving the prenatal to 5-year-old children. This committee spent about $4,000 last year, evenly split between Chelsea Schools Preschool Scholarships and the Worldwide Service Project to Eliminate Maternal and Neonatal Tetanus.

The second committee is Youth Services, serving elementary age children. This committee spent almost $3,000 going to the Chelsea Parent Teacher Organization, Mott Hospital’s Child Life Program (provides a school teacher to hospitalized children), the Easter Egg Hunt at Chelsea Retirement Community, and a Bring Up Grades Program at South Meadows Elementary.

The third committee is Sponsored Youth, which serves middle and high school age children. This committee spent over $10,000 to support the following: three Kiwanis-family clubs – (Chelsea High School Key Club, St. Louis Center’s Aktion Club, and U of M’s Circle K Club), American Legion’s Boy’s and Girl’s State Program, Chelsea Boy and Girl Scout Troops and Packs, SRSLY, Chelsea Community Fair 4-H Livestock Auction, Cooper’s Special Olympics Fun Run, Michigan State Police K Career Academy, Chelsea Athletic and Band Boosters, and the Gettysburg Battlefield Trip.

The fourth committee is Human and Spiritual Values, which spent $500 in support of Dawn Farm, where folks receive care for substance abuse and addiction.

We’ll cover the remaining four committees at a later date.

Our Monday meetings will resume on Jan. 4, with Rick and Susie Catherman, from Chelsea Bands and Band Boosters, respectively.

The meeting begins each week at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy-Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the meetings to learn about Kiwanis and click www.kiwanisclubofchelsea.org .

We wish all Chelsea Update readers a Happy New Year.
