Chelsea Kiwanis Club Hears From St. Louis Center Representatives

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

Last Monday, Development Director Christina Ferris from St. Louis Center was a guest speaker at the Chelsea Kiwanis Club weekly Zoom meeting.

St. Louis Center is a caring residential community for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The educational program began in 1960 with 60 boys, 4 priests, 4 sisters, and 5 special education teachers.

In 1973, residents slowly began attending Chelsea Public Schools. Buildings were added in the 1970’s and 80’s to provide young men more opportunities to develop their independent living skills. A women’s program began in 2002. Since 1960, 750 people have been served.

St. Louis Center has begun providing periodic presentations/seminars covering topics of interest to the community. The first presentation was Helpful Tools for Those Caring for Someone with Dementia. Call 734-475-8430 to see if a recording of the presentation is available. A quarterly newsletter is also available by joining the center’s email list.

The center now has more than 100 direct care staff and supervisors, nurses, therapists, social workers, and kitchen and maintenance staff, who are devoted to taking care of the 70 residents whose home is there.

St. Louis Center is grateful to the Chelsea area community for the support received to improve the lives of those residents. For more information and ways to help, please go to  www.stlouiscenter.org

Monday, Ele’s Place Director of Development Lindsay Clark, and Program Director Peggy Galimberti will be the guest speakers. Ele’s Place is a healing center for grieving children, teens, young adults, and their families.

The club’s 2nd Annual Gourmet Mixed Nut Sale is coming to a close. There are a limited number of delicious 2.25 pound cans of tree nuts remaining.
