There was a time when real eggs were hardboiled, dyed, and hidden for children to find in Easter egg hunts. At least that’s the way Chelsea resident Cheryl Oberholtzer remembers things.

“It was 25 years ago that neighbors invited me and my five daughters to look for real eggs in the muddy grounds at Chelsea High School,” said Oberholtzer.

She was attending the annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Chelsea Retirement Center (CRC) on Saturday morning, March 31, along with three generations of her family. The event is put on by the Chelsea High School Key Club and the Chelsea Kiwanis Club.

Kiwanis member Ray Kemner said the crowd of a couple hundred people was typical and that there were 2,500 Easter eggs to be found, some containing slips of paper that meant prizes like stuffed Easter bunnies.

“This event is a good way to get involved in the community and give something back,” said Key Club member Charlie Dahlgren, a junior at CHS.

The Easter Bunny attended the event and posed for photos as well as signaling the start of each of the egg hunts, which were based on age.

It may have taken some families longer to park and walk to the CRC grounds than it took to find the eggs, but it was something fun for kids to do on the day before Easter Sunday.
