Chelsea Kiwanis Club will hear from Roger Simpson from HART, Helping Area Response Teams on Monday.
HART is a volunteer non-profit that provides on scene resources and assistance to public servants in emergency situations. They offer relief and nourishment to first responders on the job.
Last week the club heard from Emmy Award winning composer, pianist, and Chelsea resident Brian Brill.
Brian started playing piano at age 7 with encouragement from his band director father and choir director mother. He claims to be the worst piano student ever. He would wander off the sheet music and begin playing melodies that just came to him. It wasn’t until ninth grade, when an upperclassman introduced him to the music of the English band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, that he was inspired and began to practice the piano earnestly.
His day job is writing music for television documentaries and advertisements. Currently, he is working on music for a documentary about how the state of Michigan values both its natural resources and its many industries, scheduled to be broadcast on PBS this fall. He is also working on an advertisement for a Chinese motorbike starring a singing Vin Diesel.
For fun, he enjoys playing at different venues in the area. Jazz is a favorite, as it gives the opportunity for much of his creativity. He plays on Sundays at the Chelsea Alehouse as part of a duo or trio.
Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.
