Chelsea mayor, police chief remind residents ‘It’s Chelsea Community Fair Week”

It’s fair week in Chelsea.

Mayor Jason Lindauer introduced the Aug. 21 City Council meeting saying, “It is fair week in Chelsea, Michigan,” referring to the start of the 80th Annual Chelsea Community Fair.

Fair runs through Aug. 26 this year.

During the meeting, Police Chief Ed Toth reminded the council that Main Street will be closed on Saturday, Aug. 26, beginning at 12:30 p.m. for the Run for the Rolls followed by the Chelsea Fair Parade.

During public comment, Lynn Fox, president of the Chelsea Human Rights Commission, requested that the city council table approving the commission’s bylaws at the meeting. Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan told the council that the HRC wants more time to respond to council’s recommended changes, and the council voted to table it until its Sept. 5 meeting. The HRC is having a special meeting to discuss the bylaws on Aug. 23.

In other action, the city council unanimously (Frank Hammer and Jane Pacheco absent) approved both establishing a Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee and extending the terms of the existing members by six months.

The council approved a letter of authorization for a Purchase Power Commitment (PPC) with Huron Wind, LLC.

It also approved a proposal to upgrade the Water Treatment plant and Wastewater Treatment plant SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) systems by accepting a quote from Kennedy Industries with the water portion not to exceed $41,489, the wastewater portion not to exceed $19,950, and the total not to exceed $61,439.

Also, the council approved a quote from Todd Wenzel Buick GMC of Westland for the lease to purchase two new trucks (one for the Water Department and one for the Utilities Director) for a total of $67,492.60, with annual budgeted payments of $10,000 each.
