Chelsea Girl Scout Troop 4069, under leader Meg Gower, received approval from the Chelsea Parks and Recreation Commission to move forward with a plan to plant a butterfly garden at Pierce Park.
Gower is a landscape artist who was hired previously to upgrade Pierce Park.
Gower came up with a list of flowering plants that should do well despite the prevalence of deer in the area, and her troop will help purchase and plant the garden as part of a community service project.
She estimates the cost of new plants will be between $600.
The parks commission will consider a similar project for the 2023-24 budget that will focus on shrubs and bushes.
Parks commission members reviewed budgeted park improvements for the current fiscal year including a separate section at the existing Dog Park for dogs that need a separate space. New signage and a key fob pad are among the improvements that will be recommended to City Council after the June meeting.
Also discussed was a bike rack to be purchased with 5 Healthy Towns Foundation sponsorship funds for Vet’s Park. The search for a location is underway.
The TimberTown/Trailhead project is continuing to move ahead. This project includes improvements to the park’s infrastructure and play structure as well as meetings of subcommittees to discuss the Pathway to Renewal refurbishment and pickle ball courts.
The Chelsea Parks and Recreation Commission meets next at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6.
