Chelsea Parks Commission Plan Will Soon Be Available

The City of Chelsea has grown 10 percent since the last census, but the number of parks in the city has not kept pace.

That fact was shared by members of the Chelsea Parks Commission at its Sept. 7 meeting, which was held at Pierce Park.

The Parks Commission is incorporating feedback received from the public during input sessions in July that are contributing to the Parks Plan Amendment process. The City Council has set a public hearing for Oct. 18, and the plan is expected to be available for public review from Sept.10 through Oct.18.

Chelsea City Manager John Hanifan told Parks Commission members that work has started on the Letts Creek Linear Park trail segment, and he expects work on the trail to ramp up in the next couple weeks.

The Community Center Task Force report was shared at the meeting. Members have been working on a public survey and visiting community centers in other cities. Most recently, they visited Howell’s new $6 million dollar community center.

Hanifan shared that the parklets around the City of Chelsea have been getting a lot of use. He said that they can be stored when the weather gets inclement and can be deployed in different locations next spring.

The Park Commission’s next meeting is Oct. 5 at 9 a.m.
