Chelsea planners vote to rezone vacant parcel

By Lisa Carolin

A vacant parcel of land located along the northeast corner of Dale Street and Wellington Street by Chelsea’s Bridgetown Condominium development was rezoned by the Chelsea Planning Commission at its Sept. 17 meeting.

The property was unanimously voted by the planning commission (Adam Ellison, Peter Shaw absent) to be rezoned from an agricultural district to a single-family residential district.

During a public hearing prior to the vote, several residents who live in Bridgetown Condominiums asked questions about protecting the wetlands in the area and whether the density of the proposed residences would increase.

Julia Upfal, Chelsea’s community development director, responded that there are setback requirements to wetlands and that the density would not be any more than it is now in the development.

The rezoning petition was filed by Mark and Katie Norder of Gregory, who plan to divide the land into four residential lots with frontage on Dale Street.

In other action, the Planning Commission voted to table the election of officers until its October meeting. Chair Larry Ledebur proposed that he and Vice Chair Claire Robinson become co-chairs of the commission. Because that will involve a change of the by-laws, the topic was tabled.
