Chelsea police part of special library storytime about safety on Sept. 19

Officer Shane Sumner

Chelsea Police Officer Shane Sumner will be a special guest at the Chelsea District Library on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 10:30 a.m. for a very special storytime about safety.

Librarian Edith Burney will present songs and stories and the program will conclude at 11a.m. with Sumner escorting families to the new Police Station for a short presentation and tour by Police Chief Ed Toth.

Children ages 2 to 5 are welcome to attend, accompanied by a parent, which will be held in KidSpot at the library at 221 South Main St.

No registration necessary, just drop-in.

Burney, one of three youth librarians at the library who present storytimes on Wednesdays this fall, said she worked with Toth to plan the program.

“With the new police station opening nearly next door to the library, it was a perfect time to introduce kids to our local law enforcement,” she said in a press release.

“This experience will help children learn that the police are people like you and me, and they are safe to approach when you need help,” she said, adding, “Shane will read a book he likes to read to his own kids.”

Toth will be give a short presentation to the families when they arrive at the station.
