Sit. Down. Stay. Good dog.

Today, June 29, some of the best-behaved dogs in the nation will meet at The Roberts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio, with the goal of being named the top dog in their class at the 5th annual AKC Rally® National Championship.

Lisa Allmendinger of Chelsea and Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Redwyn’s One Giant Step, RM, RAE, TDN, CGC (Buzz), will be among the contenders at the event, where a new National Champion will be crowned.

Allmendinger and Buzz worked hard this past year to qualify to compete against some of the best AKC Rally® dogs in the nation in the Rally Advanced Excellent (RAE) class. Dogs and handlers will compete for the top spot in the Novice, Advanced, Excellent, and Rally Advanced Excellent classes at this national championship.

AKC Rally® combines elements of Obedience and Agility. The dog and handler move through a course of numbered exercises, all while the handler is communicating with and praising the dog. Rally demonstrates a sense of teamwork and provides an excellent introduction to AKC Companion Events for new dogs and handlers.

The sport can also provide a challenging opportunity for competitors in other events to strengthen their skills. AKC Rally® promotes a fun and enjoyable atmosphere for dogs at all levels of competition.

This is the second time Buzz has qualified for the Rally National Championship, last year competing in the excellent class, they finished 38th in the country. This year, Allmendinger and 5-year-old Buzz have moved up to the (RAE) championship class and will compete against 149 dog-and-handler teams from across the country for the National Championship.

(Publisher’s note: I’ll let you know how we finished when we get back.)
