Chelsea Rotary Club Hears from Kate Yocum of SRSLY

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Jeff Holden for the information in this story.)

Chelsea Rotary recently heard from Kate Yocum, a Chelsea-area native.

Yocum was hired as SRSLY’s coalition coordinator in 2020 before becoming the director in 2021. She earned her Master’s in Social Work at MSU, where she interned for the Michigan Senate’s Families, a Detroit non-profit for at-risk youth.

She got her start working with youth as a summer camp counselor and manager, where she realized the importance of youth feeling valued and empowered in their communities.

In her free time, she enjoys watching football, hanging out with her nieces, and exploring the beautiful state of Michigan. She’s said she’s thrilled to be back in Chelsea, to pursue a vision of youth knowing they matter, knowing they can ask for help, and feeling like they belong.

SRSLY came together as a youth-led coalition in 2008 that started in Chelsea, in response to substance use among Chelsea youth. Fourteen years later, the group is evolving again in response to the emerging mental health needs of our youth. So now they are tackling substance use prevention and mental health with a new, high school friendly brand.

Chelsea Rotary Club have been a long supporter of SRSLY mission of connecting as a community to support youth mental health and prevent youth substance use through action, education, and advocacy. Rotary Club will be announcing its new plans to continue this support.

On Sept. 17, the Chelsea Rotary Club was out cleaning the Park and Go located just south of South Main Street and Brown Drive. This season, Rotary shows that age means nothing. The oldest Rotarian was 71 years old and Chelsea looks great thanks to these volunteers.

Chelsea Rotary Club would like to invite anyone who would like to get involved or learn more about Rotary to their next meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 27. The club has moved to Silver Maples at 100 Silver Maples Drive. Lunch is served in the game room and is $11.
