Chelsea varsity volleyball downs Bedford in 5 sets

The Chelsea Bulldog varsity volleyball team beat the Bedford Kicking Mules in an SEC showdown of the #8 Class B Ranked Bulldogs and the #9 Class A Ranked Kicking Mules on Sept. 16.

The teams played their SEC crossover match at Chelsea High School and it proved to be quite a battle.

Chelsea won the first match 25-19 and came out very sharp offensively. The serve receive has been improving recently and it showed with effective passing.

The second set went to Bedford 23-25 with the teams battling back and forth. Chelsea had some untimely missed serves, including after timeouts that disrupted their momentum and took them out of a strong rotational matchup.

The third set went to Chelsea 25-22, Bedford winning the 4th 23-25.

In the 5th set, Bedford got out to a 3-1 lead, but Chelsea battled and passed very well during the set with timely digs and picking up tips and rolls. Chelsea went up 9-4 with a block by Emma Hess.

Olivia McCalla and Emma Hess combined for some great offensive kills, as well as Morgan Matusik. The team won the game with a kill by Emma Hess off of a blocking error by Bedford.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Emma Hess with 26 kills, 29 digs and 4 aces, Morgan Matusik with 20 kills and 14 digs, Olivia McCalla with 55 assists and Savannah Steele with 21 digs.
