(Chelsea Update would like to thank Jean Vargas for the information in this story.)
At the 2022 Sounds and Sights Festival, the Chelsea Zero Waste Coalition worked to educate and provide better ways to handle waste.
The Sounds and Sights Committee invited members of the coalition to participate in the festival, and it was quite successful for the group’s initial large event.
The Coalition:
* collected 216 pounds of compostables (about 512 gallons)
* collected 184 pounds of recyclables (about 480 gallons)
* returned countless returnable cans to Kiwanis and the social tent vendor
* collected approximately 1½ yards of plastic film for the high school recycling program
Ultimately, the coalition diverted well over 400 pounds of waste from the landfill.
Volunteers worked hard, but also had a good time.
Some of the comments were: “There was a ton of positive feedback from the community.”
“They were interested in learning, thanked us for our efforts, and said they hope to see us at future events.”
“I love it; if they can do this in California, so can we.”
The Coalition plans to be present at some future Chelsea events.
The group thanks everyone for their interest.
