When you shop at the Chelsea District Library’s Used Book Sales, including the upcoming sale on Saturday, Sept. 9, thank the Friends of the Chelsea District Library for putting it together.
The book sale is a monthly event on the second Saturday from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the library basement with donations from the community and volunteers from Friends of the CDL.
A bag of books, which are in good condition, sells for $5.00.
Friends of the CDL started in the fall of 1949 and helps raise funds to supplement the library’s programs, events, materials, and equipment.
“It also supports the Chelsea District Library by working with community members and volunteers to provide advocacy for the library, its programs and policies,” said Lisa Climer, Friends of the CDL Communications Chair. “The Chelsea District Library service area encompasses 110 square miles and includes the City of Chelsea, Sylvan and Lyndon Townships and portions of Lima and Dexter Townships that are within the Chelsea School District.”
The Friends of CDL were instrumental in fund raising for the new Chelsea mobile library “Mobee,” which helps to expand access to the library’s materials, staff, technology, and services.
Two Little Free Libraries in Chelsea were built by Friends of the CDL. They’re located at Timbertown and Pierce Park and are kept filled with books from the Used Book Sales for the community to access.
“The Chelsea community is strong supporters of the Chelsea District Library and rely on its services,” said Climer. “There are children’s and teen programs monthly, and community events funded in part by the Friends of CDL such as the Midwest Literary Walk, Music in the Air, the Summer Reading Program, Song Fest and Authors in Chelsea.”
Memberships in Friends of CDL start at $10 for students, and perks include reserved seating for Friends sponsored events and options to meet and greet artists before or after events.
“Membership sign up starts in October and is good through the next calendar year,” said Climer. “In addition, members are entitled to register to choose a “primo” book (the round bookcases by the library’s stairwell) from the Kiosk during their birthday month.”
