Counting down to fair: a look back to 1950-1959

Scenes from last year's fair parade.

Another installment of the history of the Chelsea Community Fair, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this year and takes place from Aug. 21-25.

1950: Door Whitaker, Everett Van Riper, Paul Schaible and Reuben Lesser designated as a committee to investigate the possibility of securing a permanent site for the Community fair grounds located at the corner of Manchester Road and Old US-12.

1951: Completed plans for sale of bonds to finance the purchase of permanent site for fair grounds.

1952: Debt on fairgrounds paid off. Community fair set for Oct. 1-4.

1953: Red School House, a landmark at the corner of Manchester and Pritchard roads for more than 65 years acquired by Chelsea Community Fair Association.

Veterans contingent marches in the parade.

1954: Gudeman Company agreed to permit Fair Association to pipe water from company well to Community Fair Building.

1955: Fair dates, Wednesday-Friday, Aug. 17-20.

1956: Opening night of fair, Wednesday, Sept. 5 and Kiwanis sponsored amateur contest.

1957: A total of $1,500 and interest paid off on indebtedness on fair property leaving a balance of $2,500 to be paid off.

1958: A 32 foot by 150 foot building first permanent construction project on fair grounds.

1959: A concert by Chelsea’s 125th Anniversary Brother of the Brush band under the direction of Bill Lubahn.

And kids ride floats, too.
