Engage in 5th Annual Washtenaw Reads Virtually with Chelsea District Library

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Catherine Sossi for the information in this story.)

The Chelsea District Library has teamed up with neighboring libraries to offer the 5th Annual Washtenaw Reads, a countywide program that promotes literature and civil dialogue through the shared experience of reading and discussing a notable book.

This year’s choice is All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brandon Kiely. This young adult novel was a 2016 Coretta Scott King Honor Award winner, and deftly tells an engrossing story perfect for teens and adults alike. Learn more about the novel and the authors by visiting www.washtenawreads.org

Print copies of All American Boys will be available for borrowing at the Chelsea District Library via lobby pickup, and ebooks and audiobooks can be borrowed by visiting tln.overdrive.com or using the Libby app and signing in with a Chelsea District Library card.

Call 734-475-8732 x219 or email [email protected] for assistance. Serendipity Books in Chelsea will also have copies available for purchase.

Virtual Author Talk, Writing Workshops, and Book Discussion

This year, Chelsea residents can tune into a virtual author talk with Jason Reynolds and Brandon Kiely. They discuss how they came to write All American Boys together, the importance of the book’s themes in their own lives, and how we can create meaningful inter-racial dialogue around issues like police brutality.

his video will premiere on Feb.16 at 7 p.m. and will be available to watch on the Ann Arbor District Library’s YouTube channel, AADL.TV, all winter long.

In the months of January and February, the Chelsea District Library and the Dexter District Library are partnering with Michelle Tuplin of Chelsea’s Serendipity Books to put on a writing workshop discussing truth and authenticity in writing. This two-part, evening workshop is perfect for both experienced and beginner writers.

Participants may attend Part 1 (Jan. 21 or Jan. 26) and Part 2 (Feb.16 or 25) for the full workshop experience.

To register for either session, visit www.chelseadistrictlibrary.org and click on events.

The Chelsea District Library will host a discussion of All American Boys during the virtual book club, Reading Glasses, on Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. Anyone interested in attending may register by calling 734-475-8732 x219, or visiting www.chelseadistrictlibrary.org and selecting events.
