First Police Chief Interviews Planned for Sept. 12

The first Chelsea police chief candidate interviews are planned for Sept. 12 beginning at 3 p.m. inside the City Council Chambers with five candidates expected to be in attendance, and a Zoom option will be available as well.

The city is working with the Michigan Municipal League to finalize details, but a public meet and greet of the candidates is planned for Sept. 20, while final interviews are planned for Sept. 21. The new chief is expected to be selected by City Council later this month and be on the job in October.

In the meantime, Mayor Jane Pacheco was unanimously chosen as the city council representative to the Public Safety Strategic Planning Group and she joins five community at large members: Rich Barston, Janet Martin Conners, Kate Henson, Robert Long and Michael Townley appointed by the city council last month.

The length of the terms will be decided once a new police chief has been hired.

All of this took place at the Tuesday, Sept. 6 regular City Council meeting.

The elected officials also set a mid-year review date for a special meeting for Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. to reevaluate the priorities that were set at the annual visioning session in February.

The week of Sept. 17-23 was proclaimed Constitution Week in the city in honor of the 235th anniversary of the US Constitution.

The City Council also held a discussion about the feasibility of yard waste pick-up in the city. It’s a service that was never officially offered, but in the past, had been provided as a courtesy, until the volume became hard to manage, and it was stopped.

From the city’s website:

The Public Works Department picks up brush placed along the street-side curb extension. Scheduled brush pickup starts on the second Monday of the month.  Crews pick up different size materials at different times that week due to the equipment required.

Place loose, dime-size or smaller sticks in a biodegradable bag or in a container that can be dumped. Please do not use plastic bags.

Stack larger branches and limbs (not bigger than four inches in diameter) with the large, cut ends facing the same direction for ease of moving.

Remove all roots, stumps and dirt from branches and limbs.

Do not include grass clippings, weeds, plants, yard rakings, sod or dirt. Public Act 264 of 1990 “Yard Clippings Diversion Act” prohibits lawn clippings from being placed with your garbage and brush.

Pickup times and routes vary based on other work scheduled for the week.

If brush is not along the street side curb extension when the crews move through an area, it will not be picked up until the following month. If you miss brush pickup, you can transport your brush to the Solid Waste Department (located on Werkner Road) Wednesday through Saturday weekly.

A compost pile is available at the Solid Waste Department for the deposit of leaves, weeds, plants, yard rakings and grass clippings. Please empty bags at the site. There is no charge to residents for use of the compost pile. Non-residents are charged $1.00 per bag.

You can also bring bags of brush to the Solid Waste Department.
