Human Rights Commission Discusses MLK Jr. Days of Service and Action Activities

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission welcomed new member Mary Keaton at its Jan. 4 meeting.

In addition, HRC members discussed plans surrounding the observation of MLK Day and approved a budget of $150 to pay for a facilitator for CLARA Training (How to engage nonviolently in difficult conversations through a 5-step process) and up to $50 to pay for printing.

Activities during the month of January that are part of the Chelsea 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Days of Service and Action include interviews with people who have been involved with social movements, a youth essay contest sponsored by Chelsea Kiwanis, making blankets for refugees sponsored by the Material Girls, and collections for Faith in Action and Safe House. The co-sponsors of this year’s events are One World One Family, The Chelsea District Library, Chelsea Rotary and the Chelsea Human Rights Commission.

The HRC approved both its 2022 Report and its working plan for 2023, both of which will go to Chelsea City Council for approval.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the HRC is on Feb. 1 at 7 p.m.
