Human Rights Commission finalizes draft of annual plan at work session

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission approved the draft of its 2021 Annual Plan during a work session via Zoom on Jan. 13.

The plan now heads to the Chelsea City Council for final approval.

Members of the HRC divided the topics to be included in the plan into both internal and external activities. HRC President Susan Morrel-Samuels reminded members that due to the pandemic, there is still uncertainty as to when face-to-face meetings will be possible. She encouraged everyone to be flexible.

Internal activities proposed include:

  • a retreat for HRC members.
  • a review of HRC bylaws.
  • communication with other human rights commissions.
  • creating a social media presence to post pre-approved notices and information.

Proposed external activities for the HRC’s 2021 Annual Plan include:

  • continuing to submit a list of training opportunities for community organizations.
  • setting up speakers via Zoom and involving all represented groups.
  • having moderated online discussion groups focusing on topics like racism.
  • exploring the feasibility of hosting programming built around community civility and dialogue.
  • carrying out a community-wide Martin Luther King, Jr. Day celebration in 2022.

The HRC’s next regularly scheduled meeting is at 7 p.m. on Feb. 3.
