Human Rights Commission Has New Member, Plans Panel Discussion for Civility Month

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission will have a new member when it meets next month. Brenda Donaldson was unanimously appointed to the board by the Chelsea City Council on Aug. 16 for a term that runs through Feb. 1, 2023.

Donaldson, an MD, moved to Chelsea in 2017 and has a private medical acupuncture practice.

In addition, the Human Rights Commission is organizing a panel event on Nov. 4 at a location to be determined that has a draft theme of “Words like divisiveness, polarization, intolerance, bullying and meanness have been used to describe our current climate. How do these show up in your experience and what do you think we can do about it?”

A panel of speakers is expected to include Justin Heinze, PhD, a co-principal investigator National Center on School Safety and a Chelsea School District parent, youth, faith, business, and school representatives. Mayor Melissa Johnson was selected by the City Council as the government representative.

This forum is expected to be one of several events planned as part of civility month slated to take place in November. (More information can be found below).

In other business, the City Council approved a request to recognize Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, with a proclamation. Minor changes were made to the proclamation.

The Chelsea Soccer Club’s request to be recognized as a nonprofit group operating in the community was unanimously adopted. This is the first step in applying for a gaming license from the state to hold a raffle.
