Human Rights Commission planning discussions continue

By Lisa Carolin

The Chelsea Human Rights Commission met via tele-conference on May 6.

Each of the five members of the HRC had reviewed City of Chelsea policies to determine which have relevance to the HRC and to make a list of those policies they feel need further discussion.

Following a review of those policies, HRC President Susan Morrel-Samuels said she will speak with the city manager about the Title VI Nondiscrimination policy and what its relationship is to the HRC’s nondiscrimination ordinance.

Also discussed was GARE, the Government Alliance on Race and Equity, the national organization of which Washtenaw County is a member. A few HRC members plan to attend an orientation this week to learn more about the possibility of smaller communities joining GARE.

Also discussed was the HRC’s 2020 plan, which Morrel-Samuels said is up in the air due to Covid 19 restrictions. Members are thinking ahead to the fall and making plans such as a gathering with Chelsea High School exchange students, which will depend on whether public gatherings are permitted.

HRC members reconfirmed that they plan to have a booth at the Senior Center Expo which has been rescheduled for Aug.15.

The HRC’s next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, June 3, at 6 p.m.
