Jaytec status, land split, farmers market approval on City Council agenda

Chelsea logoDawn Dayton, a representative from the shuttered Jaytec factory at 5800 Sibley Road, is expected to make a presentation about the building’s status to the Chelsea City Council tonight at the council meeting.

Last year, Dayton told the City Council that the idled plant would reopen in the third quarter, but that didn’t happen. Here’s the story.

Jaytec is one of about five companies that has received tax abatements from the state through the City Council, but there are certain stipulations attached. Other companies currently receiving tax abatements are Chelsea Milling Company and Hayes Sumner, Sheridan Books and Sheridan Books, Inc., and Frame Hardwoods.

According to the memo about the Industrial Facilities Tax exemptions, “The IFT Exemption Certificate entitles the facility to a 50-percent reduction of the millage rates (with some exclusions for State Education Tax and School Operating Tax) for a term determined by an evaluation process.”

On the business agenda is a request for a parcel split and a pair of special event permits that would allow the two farmers markets to operate in the Palmer lot beginning in May if they are approved.

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. in the new Municipal Building in the City Council chambers.
