Joe Merkel Memorial Golf Outing on May 30

By Lisa Carolin

Four Chelsea High School students will receive $500 scholarships this year made possible by the Joe Merkel Memorial Golf Outing, which will take place Saturday, May 30.

The event takes place at Pierce Lake Golf Course, 1175 South Main St. Sign in starts at 7:30 a.m. and the scramble format tournament gets underway at 8:30 a.m.

Merkel, who died a few years ago, owned the Wolverine Bar.

“Joe was a big community supporter, so we’re looking for kids who excel in the community,” said Jeff Vogel, who helps organize the teams for the golf tournament and is part of the Sons of the American Legion. “The rest of the money will go toward improvements in the hall.”

He’s speaking of the Chelsea American Legion Post 31, located at 1700 Ridge Road on Cavanaugh Lake. That’s where the dinner will take place following the tournament.

Last year, there were 28 teams of four who participated. Vogel says there is no back up date for the tournament, which is in its third year.

“We’ve been really lucky to get out there and play every time,” said Vogel. “If it’s raining, most guys will go out there and play.”

The cost is $75 per person and that includes 18 holes of golf with a cart, skins game, closest to the pins and longest drive, lunch at the turn and dinner. There are cash prizes for first, second and third place, and a 50/50 drawing.

For more information or to sign up, contact Vogel at 734-475-9100 or at home 734-475-2775.
