The Chelsea Community Fairgrounds is the place to enjoy a pig roast dinner on Sunday, July 13 from noon-7 p.m. and at the same time help Drew Brown and his family.

The 22-year-old was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, and the pig roast is a fundraiser to help the family with medical costs.

Brown, who played forward on the Chelsea High School hockey team and was recognized as one of the best local high school players in 2009, is close to finishing his junior year at Providence College in Rhode Island where he’s been playing hockey.

When Brown took a hit on his leg during the hockey play-offs a few months ago, an MRI showed a suspicious tumor, which led to a biopsy and a diagnosis in May of bone cancer in his left femur.

“I’m taking it a day at a time,” said Brown. “I have good days and bad days. I’m trying to get out and stay active.”

He says that he feels pretty well, and hopes to attend the July 13 fundraiser.

“It’s nice being home and around family,” said Brown. “The support is amazing. Many people have reached out with donations, and I hope to be able to connect with people at the fundraiser.”

Brown has been receiving chemotherapy treatments at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, and in August, he is scheduled to have an operation on his leg that will involve replacing part of his femur.

“Things are going according to plan,” said Duke Brown, Drew’s father. “He’ll finish six rounds of chemotherapy, then have surgery, and then have more chemo.”

As far as returning to college, Duke Brown says that Drew’s teachers are working with him to complete his junior year.

“We’re going to get through this,” said Duke Brown. “It’s going to be fine.”

The fundraiser at the Chelsea Fairgrounds will take place in the green event barn and will include a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction.

You can send donations to the Drew Brown Cancer Fund, Farmers State Bank, PO Box 450, Grass Lake, MI 49240.
