(Chelsea Update would like to thank Joe Yekulis for the information in this story.)

St. Louis Center was always near and dear to the heart of the late Joe Merkel, who owned the Wolverine Food and Spirits Restaurant at the corner of M-52 and Old US-12 for 45 years with his wife, Judy.

And during his lifetime, he would give freely of his time and talents to assist St. Louis Center with special events, golf outings, and anything else that this unique community of special needs children and adults needed over the years to help them stay afloat.

As with many of the non-profits in the Chelsea community, Joe gave quietly – never asking for anything in return.

To honor his lifelong devotion to the developmentally disabled, the Servants of Charity are dedicating the 26th Annual Memorial Golf Outing to his memory to benefit St. Louis Center and its programs.

The outing will take place Saturday, July 13 at Pierce Lake Golf Course, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start and a scramble format.

The cost is $90 per golfer or $500 for a team sponsorship that includes a program ad, hole sign, and a sponsor gift. Individual hole sponsorships are also available for $100 each.

For more information about the outing, please visit www.stlouiscenter.org, or contact Cindy Lesser to register at 475-8430.

St. Louis Center was established in 1960, and has been serving persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities for 53 years.
