Dear Editor:
The Chelsea District Library (CDL) has been an ideal community and civic engagement leader. The library is a trusted, stable, positive community resource. The library has brought substantial community assets to civic action, including physical space, technology resources, knowledgeable and skilled staff, a partner with influential community groups, and a history of successful and valued performance.
In 2008, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation honored our Chelsea District Library as the “Best Small Library in America.” More than 600 citizens visit CDL on an average day. 1,400+ K-12 students, more than half of Chelsea’s student population, currently enjoy CDL’s vibrant “Summer Reading Program.” Nearly 70% of the residents in CDL’s service area possess library cards, dwarfing the national average of 40%. The CDL strives each day to remain a sparkling community and cultural jewel.
On the Aug. 5, 2014 ballot, you will be asked to vote “YES” to support a Chelsea District Library millage increase of 0.32 mills, an annual tax increase of $24 for a home with an estimated value of $150k. This millage increase will enable CDL to maintain its menu of selection and services amid library revenues in decline since 2009.
The Chelsea district consists of wonderful communities in which to live a fulfilling life. A vibrant and imaginative Chelsea District Library is an integral ingredient of all things Chelsea for as many citizens as possible. We ask for you to consider giving your support on Aug. 5.
